How to Find Creative Volunteers in Your Church (Even If You Think You Have None)

One of the most common hesitations we hear from pastors isn’t about budget or strategy. It’s simpler than that: “We don’t have anyone who could do this.” But we’re asking pastors to rethink this approach.

Every church has a person who can’t stop taking pictures on Sunday. A college student who minored in marketing. A stay-at-home parent who used to write. A teenager who runs a personal TikTok account with more craft than most brand managers.

That person is already in your congregation. You just haven’t asked them yet.

We’ve seen pastors completely surprised when their congregation full of ‘zero’ creatives turns into a full-blown Creative Team with 20+ members.

Before anything else, a great creative volunteer is a member of the body. They’re someone who shows up, serves with humility, and actually cares about what God is doing in your church. This isn’t a secular marketing hire. It’s a ministry role, and it should be treated as one.

Look for someone who:

  • Is a partner (member) of your local church — someone invested in your mission, not just volunteering for a résumé line

  • Is teachable and has a genuine desire to grow — in both character and skill

  • Models your church’s core values — a creative without integrity is just noise

  • Is dependable — they don’t have to be excellent on day one, but they do have to show up

We can teach someone the technique, the tools, and the strategy. Character is the one thing we can’t install.

The roles are broader than you think

A “creative volunteer” isn’t one thing. When you look at your congregation, think about these lanes:

Immediate Needs:

PHOTOGRAPHER

Capturing Sunday moments, events, and community life. Often the person you already see with their phone out every week. This will be the first role we’ll need to fill.

VIDEOGRAPHER

Reels, event recaps, short promo clips. Someone comfortable on camera and behind it. This could be the same person as the photographer.

Positions to fill over time:

WRITER

Captions, blog posts, emails, promo copy. Anyone who communicates well in written form — teachers, journalists, students.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Sermon series graphics, event flyers, social assets. Anyone with an eye for layout, color, and visual communication.

SOCIAL MEDIA CREATOR

Scheduling content, managing stories, engaging your audience. The person who already lives on Instagram or TikTok.

MARKETING STRATEGIST

Thinking through campaigns, analyzing what works, connecting the dots. Often a business or comms background.

You don’t need all of these. You need one or two people who lean toward one or two of these lanes. Reformed Media fills the rest.

Who are you looking for?

When you’re scanning your congregation, ask yourself these questions:

  • Who is always taking pictures or videos on Sunday morning?

  • Who writes well — maybe a teacher, a grad student, or a journalist?

  • Who’s always on their phone?

  • Who loves design, art, or visual communication?

  • Who has mentioned wanting to use their gifts more in the church?

  • Who hasn’t found their fit in any other area of ministry?

  • Who seems bored in a traditional volunteer role but lights up around creativity?

That’s your person. They don’t need a portfolio. They don’t need to know what a content calendar is. They just need a willing heart and a phone in their pocket.

What we expect of your volunteer

  • Access to an iPhone (usually other phones don’t have good enough resolution for what we do)

  • Access to Google Drive (it’s a free, quick download) to upload photos, videos, and content — we set up the folder, they just drop files in

  • Complete any training or development assignments we send — these are brief and practical

  • Attend team events and creative meetings as needed — we keep these minimal and meaningful

  • Help recruit and welcome other creatives into the team — a team of two is better than a team of one
